Bridgwater’s Czech-Slovak Links put into Historical Context at Public Event

In 1992 Bridgwater became the first British town to twin with a Czechoslovakian town after the Velvet Revolution in that country brought about the end of Communism. On Monday October 30th, as part of the ‘Bridgwater Together’ week of internationalist events at the Engine Room, High street home of Somerset Film & Video, 2 speakers will talk about the historic events that connect Britain and Bridgwater to the Czech and Slovak Republics.

Licence Revoked for Town Centre Store as Police clampdown on ASB

International Food Centre on Binford Place

At today’s hearing of Sedgemoor District Council Licensing Panel an application from the Police and Trading Standards for the revocation of the Premises Licence for the International Food Centre on Bridgwater’s troubled Binford Place was agreed. Chairman of the Panel Cllr Jeff Savage said the Licence would be withdrawn at 1800 on 25th October pending any appeal by the holder Mr Mehmet Yildirim.

The Police, Trading Standards, the Town Council, Ward Councillors and residents all spoke at the hearing which lasted almost 4 hours and heard evidence of illegal tobacco sales, failure to comply with conditions previously set and links to anti-social behaviour in the Town Centre and specifically on Binford Place which the Police and Town Council identified as their number one trouble spot. Diversity Voice: Bringing Communities Together

Diversity Voice AGM at the Victoria Centre, Bridgwater

Since the Brexit vote a year ago it’s been a difficult time for the many new workers that came to the UK looking for work and a future. Stories of a rise in hate crime since the Referendum along with instances of ‘What are you still doing here?’ being the greeting in many workplaces the day after, are widespread and well documented. What a state we’ve got ourselves into! All the more reason to support organisations such as Diversity Voice based at the Victoria Park Community Centre in Bridgwater which held it’s AGM this week and had as it’s guest speaker, former MP Roger Casale, now a founder of the New Europeans Movement and a fervent campaigner for the rights of Europeans.

It’s Fair Time Again

West Street once again plays host to Bridgwater Fair

Bridgwater Fair is here again and the Westover residents of West Street once more take the bullet for the rest of us so that this ancient tradition, which brings 1,000s to our town can take place. As part of our role, Westover Councillors, are involved in pre-meetings with all the agencies that work together to put on the fair, whether it’s the Police, Fire Authority, St Johns Ambulance, Showmans Guild or all the many Sedgemoor workers that are diverted to Fair duty.

Westover Mural Takes Shape

Local resident Dawn Difazio drops in to help artist Rachel Gundry with her mural

Westover ward councillors recently responded to residents requests to change the mural on the Wessex Water pumping station building on the junction of Old Taunton Road and Broadway with something that would reflect the heritage and promote the culture of the town. Councillors Smedley, Pearce and Morley put in a bid for funding through the town council and approached local artist Rachel Gundry to take on the project and now, with ideas and help from residents, the project is underway.

Rachel said “I am getting a great response from everyone who passes and some are offering to help. I could do with a few more artists to lend me a hand and I’ll be there next for a  full week from 17th to 22nd September.  The project has relied on extensive research, design, re-drawing and involvement from local people because I want to get it right and with more local people  seeing the painting as it is taking shape means their comments have been so supportive and positive. “ Continue reading “Westover Mural Takes Shape”
