Popular Music History Night this Thursday at the Arts Centre

The Bridgwater Arts Centre is currently going through major refurbishment with a grand opening scheduled for the Autumn. Until then bar events will take place each Thursday.  This Thursday (27 Feb)  Dave Chapple will host the first of a regular monthly music night called “Popular Music History Sessions” which aim to be an enjoyable, but also a serious, look at pop music from c. 1920 to c. 1980.

Thursday Evening

Dave says “I’ll be playing vinyl or shellac records from my own collection, covering most kinds of pop music within that sixty-year span, and saying a little bit about each track I play.  I hope to play pop, rock n roll, rhythm and blues, jazz, blues, country, pop instrumental, big band, soul, gospel, highlife, kwela, ska, mento, rock steady, reggae, funk, jazz-funk, disco, salsa, afro-cuban, merengue, calypso, mambo, cha cha cha………….and maybe other forms. “

Free Event

The Art Centre Bar is a small and intimate space and ideal for events of this nature. Dave adds
“What I thought would work best if if I start off by playing 20 records, saying a little about each one-why I think it’s good!-then from maybe 9pm to 10pm lower the volume, and have us all chat, comment, argue, advocate, about music till a finish at 10pm. For the first session, Thursday 27th February, I thought I’d play some of the records that have most influenced me in my 60-year long, passionate journey into the heart and soul of black people’s music, including, of course, black music sung and played by white musicians….”
The event is free, but the booze isn’t
