Free speech is under threat in this country says US Vice President JDVance.
If I wanted to say that Donald Trump is a ridiculous excuse for a President who has conned the American public into voting for him I wouldn’t even be allowed to say it.

And if I wanted to say his latest decision to negotiate with Putin without involving Zelensky would be an insult to the thousands of brave Ukrainian people who had heroically fought and died for their country I wouldn’t be allowed to say it.

And if I wanted to say….no hang about, I can say anything and we do have freedom of speech. He’s just wrong isn’t he.
We’re all just not saying the things he wants us to say or what he wants to hear.
He thinks there’s no climate crisis. He’d have got more brownie points for irony if he’d said it from the Louisiana floods or while trying to put out the raging California wildfires . But Americans don’t do irony. Which is ironic.

Vance says, again without irony, that immigration is a massive danger.
America, he probably doesn’t realise, but he does, is 100% created by immigration. Even the native Americans migrated there from Asia. But the USA was built on the premise that said ‘bring us your huddled masses’. IE ’emigrate and come here. You’re welcome.
I took some Americans around Ireland this year exploring their roots. What’s the surname? I asked. It turned out to be Bulgarian. Well, maybe we’ll find a Zhivkoff Tartan. But no, it was Irish on the grandmother’s side, Bulgarian on the grandfathers, Dutch on the third cousin twice removeds and Armenian from a door to door encyclopedia salesman that spent a weekend with them in Colorado back in the 1930s.
Because they’re American.
They’re a whole nation built on migration. And they’re the most powerful nation on the planet. That’s probably a success story in anyone’s book. Thanks to migration.

Of course not everyone thought Vance was talking nonsense. In Germany, with a few days to go before the election, the AfD’s candidate for chancellor, Alice Weidel, praised his speech as “excellent” and the two then met up for a cozy chat.
AfD are ‘Alternativ fur Deutschland’ the far right wing party in the German elections, who have been shunned by all other parties as being beyond the pale.
And now we have the leaders of the USA, not to mention their multi billionaire backer Elon Musk, suggesting to work with them.
I don’t think…..that it’s the European heirs to the devastation of their country’s that was the original rise of Fascism and all the consequences of that, who are the real threat to democracy.
