On Monday 5th October the Sedgemoor Scrutiny Committees – Corporate chaired by Brian Smedley and Community chaired by Kath Pearce, will meet jointly to look at all matters maritime that might benefit from some joined up thinking in the wake of the proposed River Parrett Tidal Barrier.

Brian Smedley explained “There is a great opportunity here to get this right. The Barrier is certainly going to happen –but exactly how it operates will determine whether or not the river can be accessible in future and therefore navigable. That’s already an issue due to the fixed span bridges that have been put in over the years seaward of the docks. However, there are proposals that could keep the river at a consistent height and therefore open up navigability to the Town Centre and further upstream towards the interior of the Somerset levels- to Weston Zoyland Puming Station and to Langport for instance. If that’s feasible then there’s the option to re-open the docks – maybe via the barge lock. If that’s possible then there’s no reason the Bridgwater-Taunton Canal couldn’t be linked into the waterways and coastal tourism network which would bring great economic opportunities. All this will depend on the operational nature and mechanics of the barrier. On top of this there’s the proposals for a Tidal Lagoon in the Parrett Estuary –and joined up thinking would require advance consideration of that in this whole series of possibilities. We can’t just go blindly into this.”

What will work and what’s ‘pie in the sky’

Kath Pearce said “The meeting will be in three parts. The Tidal Barrier is crucial to what else can be done on our waterways. First we’ll ask SDC to give us the background to situation and where we are with the options that are being considered. Then it will be over to the Environment Agency to explain why delivery of the Barrage is being accelerated and what progress has been made, what their preferred option for the barrier is and then the likely impact on the port and the docks and the proposed Bridgwater Bay tidal lagoon. Finally we want to bring in Community groups like the Inland Waterways Association, Military Boats and the Friends of Bridgwater Docks who have big plans for the river, canal and docks that are dependent on these first stages. Crucially we need to fathom out what will work and what is pie in the sky”

The meeting, which will start at 2.30pm at Bridgwater House,Kings Square, will be open to the public and will bring together experts and campaigners involved in a wide range of key areas.

Westover’s County Councillor Highlights Health & Well-Being Budget

The Somerset County Councillor for Bridgwater South, which includes Westover and Hamp wards,  has announced  that another £5,000.00 in Grants has become available to pass on to worthy causes this year through the SCC County Councillor Health and Wellbeing Budget Scheme 2015- 2016

Cllr Leigh Redman, who is also currently Mayor of Bridgwater, says “Following the success of last year’s Scheme the Health and Wellbeing Budget Scheme is running again and applications can be made through County Councillors until the end of January 2016.”

“This is quite a short period but offers a great opportunity to fund some innovative projects in Somerset. Councillors are able to put forward grant proposals (£250 minimum) which encourage local initiatives empowering communities to take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing and help people become better integrated in their community, particularly those who find it difficult to join in currently.”

“This supports the delivery of the Health and Wellbeing Strategy at a very local level focusing on areas of the Strategy in particular, which concentrate on People, families and communities taking responsibility for their own health and wellbeing, We expect any proposal to meet at least one of the Health and Wellbeing Strategy priorities above and a financial breakdown of the proposal is required. ”

It is expected that the funding will largely be directed towards voluntary/community groups, parish councils and not-for-profit organisations.

All applications must be made through the relevant County Councillor.

If you know of any groups please pass on and signpost to Cllr Redman as soon as possible..

New Eastover Web Site Launched

Eastover Web Just across the river from Westover is (oddly) Eastover. This is the part of the Town Centre where a new hotel will be built, where the Post Office was relocated to and where a length of stone in the shape of a rope wends it’s way through the riverside pavement originally intended to be fibre-optically lit so it would be visible from space to visiting Martians. That didn’t work.

But something that does work is the new EASTOVER WEBSITE . And you can visit it here.

eastover cllrsThe Eastover Ward website is the work of Town and District Councillors Moira Brown and Dave Loveridge and will be a valuable contribution to the Town’s net profile covering issues of special interest to that part of Bridgwater .

You can contact the Eastover councillors at moira@eastover.co.uk and dave@eastover.co.uk

What exactly is a Bioblitz?

A Bioblitz is a period of ecological surveying in an attempt to record all living species within a designated area. A group including Sedgemoor’s Ecologist, Friends of The Meads and volunteers will conduct an informal field study over the afternoon to identify as many plants, animals, fungi and other organisms as possible. You don’t need to be a wildlife expert – just come along with a willingness to learn and explore.

Fair Today Gone Tomorrow

Bridgwater Fair springs up along West Street
Bridgwater Fair springs up along West Street

It’s Fair time again. For all the fun and frolics of the next few days, there’s a backlog of preparation into making sure the event runs smoothly and a considerable amount of stuff for the residents of West Street to put up with to make it happen. And by Sunday it’ll all be over.

At the Multi-Agency Pre-Fair meeting on 4th September, all the agencies involved in making the Fair happen met at Sedgemoor Council Offices including residents representatives and ward councillors. The Fair covers two Town Wards -Westover, represented by Brian Smedley and Kathy Pearce and Wyndham represented by Gill Slocombe and Rachel Caswell. For County Council , Ann Bown covers the Wyndham patch while Leigh Redman the Westover one.

New Fair Boss

This year Sedgemoor’s Fair Supremo is Rob Semple. Today Rob took ward councillors on a walkabout as the Fair was being set up to ensure things were running smoothly and potential last minute problems could be identified.

For West street residents the main problem is the disruption to their daily lives, the noise, clutter and traffic generated by the Fair people, especially the difficulty of access to their homes and the parking. An extra problem with large crowd control is the need for an increased Police presence, the operation of first aid groups like St John’s Ambulance and the access for emergency services such as the Fire Brigade. Environmental Health, Trading standards, Animal Welfare were also on standby for potential problems.

Cllr Brian Smedley said “2014 was a successfully run Fair and set a high standard for Rob to live up to, but this also means that everything is  in place and the system is working and shown to work. The pre meeting identified concerns and the walkabout showed that they’d all been addressed to everyone’s satisfaction.”

New Road issues

The Fairfield itself is part of the Wyndham ward and  the new road to the Summerfields Housing Development has become a factor in the logistics for the Fair. A fence has been erected to seperate it from the main field events and access has been established  through a new gate. Cllr Gill Slocombe said “Wyndham ward councillors are satisfied that the correct precautions have been put in place  and hope that everyone has a safe and successful Fair”

Cllr Smedley added “One knock on factor of the loss of the extra field is that Fair lorries are now parking on the former Splash site. This year residents didn’t object to this, however, now we find that the vehicles have parked across the public right of way and have asked that this be addressed immediatly.”

The Fair opens on Wednesday 30th September and lasts for 4 nights.
